The ignition of your GSXR is the assembly that enables you to start your motorcycle. This is generally done with a key ignitions switch assembly that is located right on the console of your motorcycle. Changing the ignition on your GSXR is in no way a more common problem than re-keying it. It seems that losing keys can be quite a problem for some people, so here are some things that might help you avoid as much trouble as possible with getting your bike started!
First, make sure that you zip-tie a spare key near the battery box under the seat. This is a good hiding place, will ensure that you always have a key, and can save massive problems down the line (come on guys, how often have you used that spare car key you hid in the gas cap?…).
Make sure that you do not lose the little black stamp that came with your bike! The dealer would need this to make you another ignition key. There is no code hidden on the ignition back… that little black stamp is all you have, so don’t lose it!
Removing your ignition is really not as hard as you might think it is. First, you need to loosen the pinch bolts that are on both sides of the upper triple clamp. Then, you need to remove the stem nut (measurement… 32mm). Then, you will need to lift the clamp and rotate your ignition so that you can see the underside of it. You will then need to use a key type torx bit to remove the ignition from the clamp.
If you find that you need to remove the ignition altogether, then you will need to remove the upper and side fairings and disconnect the plugs located on the right side under your ram air tube. This should take care of removing your ignition. Even though it sounds difficult, it is really not very hard.

Keeping your ignition in good working order is very important, so remember these small tips. First, make sure that the wiring stays intact. If your wiring becomes frayed or exposed, you should see about correcting the problem as soon as possible. Also, if for any reason your ignition starts to short out or cease working at any point, you should immediately get it checked out so as not to get left stranded with a bike that won’t start.
