The ignition of your GSXR is the assembly that enables you to start your motorcycle. This is generally done with a key ignitions switch assembly that is located right on the console of your motorcycle. Changing the ignition on your GSXR is in no way a more common problem than re-keying it. It seems that losing keys can be quite a problem for some people, so here are some things that might help you avoid as much trouble as possible with getting your bike started!

First, make sure that you zip-tie a spare key near the battery box under the seat. This is a good hiding place, will ensure that you always have a key, and can save massive problems down the line (come on guys, how often have you used that spare car key you hid in the gas cap?…).

Make sure that you do not lose the little black stamp that came with your bike! The dealer would need this to make you another ignition key. There is no code hidden on the ignition back… that little black stamp is all you have, so don’t lose it!

Removing your ignition is really not as hard as you might think it is. First, you need to loosen the pinch bolts that are on both sides of the upper triple clamp. Then, you need to remove the stem nut (measurement… 32mm). Then, you will need to lift the clamp and rotate your ignition so that you can see the underside of it. You will then need to use a key type torx bit to remove the ignition from the clamp.

If you find that you need to remove the ignition altogether, then you will need to remove the upper and side fairings and disconnect the plugs located on the right side under your ram air tube. This should take care of removing your ignition. Even though it sounds difficult, it is really not very hard.

Keeping your ignition in good working order is very important, so remember these small tips. First, make sure that the wiring stays intact. If your wiring becomes frayed or exposed, you should see about correcting the problem as soon as possible. Also, if for any reason your ignition starts to short out or cease working at any point, you should immediately get it checked out so as not to get left stranded with a bike that won’t start.

Service manual for your GSXR are not only helpful, they are necessary! You cannot expect to bake a cake without the recipe unless you are a professional chef, so you cannot possibly hope to keep your GSXR in prime road worthy condition without the service manual for it, especially if you are not a professional mechanic who works on them every day, all day.

There are basically two different types of service manuals out there. One is the manufacturers service manual, and the other is the after-market service manual made by a third party company. Both can come in handy, both include information you need, and you have to have at least one of these, if not both.

This will enable you with the information you need to keep your bike on the road and out of the fix-it shed! However you choose to obtain your manual, make sure that you either know a friend who has the same one or that you make sure and read plenty of reviews. Think of some names that you trust… what parts have you put on your bike? Who did you buy these parts from? Did they work right and last? If so, then you already have your first options. Go to these companies, find out if they offer frame sliders, and see what they cost. Of course, it could never hurt to check out the pro brands as well, just to see what they will run you. However, it is really not necessary to have racing grade frame sliders if you simply drive it to the lake once in awhile.

As far as installation goes, you may either choose to install them yourself, or to have a mechanic install them. If you choose to do it yourself, just make sure that you follow the instructions and install them right… slack will be paid for if you ever have to drop your bike in an emergency, and it will be in the form of a ruined fairing or messed up bike body! If you choose to let a mechanic install them, just make sure that you get somebody reputable to do the job. It won’t help you to have some amateur mechanic banging and twisting on your GSXR… and it won’t help you in a lowside if your frame sliders slide right off because they were not tightened right!

Exhaust systems can either serve to greatly increase the overall performance and image of your bike, or they can serve to hamper both of these drastically. There are several things that a good exhaust system should do, and there are several reasons to make sure that your exhaust system is in good order before going on a ride. Some people have this mindset that says “ well, the exhaust will escape whether or not I have a good exhaust system, right? So, lets just ride!…”. This could not be further from the truth.

A good rider recognizes that exhaust systems play not only a great role in engine performance, but in how the engine sounds when the bike is being ridden. Your exhaust system should offer good power, tone, and dependability. Your tailpipes should be tuned for optimum efficiency, and you should have a fully functional muffler that keeps the noise of your engine manageable. Even if you would rather have your bike louder, mufflers are made specifically for this purpose. The answer is not to go without one!

When you get a new bike, there are several things to check for to make sure that your exhaust system is up to par with your needs. First of all, you need to check for serious rust damage. If your exhaust system is damaged by rust or other damage, then it is time to replace it (or at least replace the damaged parts). Make sure that there are no holes in it. Also, make sure that the muffler is intact, and inspect it for rust or other damage. Make sure that the system is readily attached and not hanging loose. Make sure that the screws and/or bolts holding it in place are secured tightly and not stripped or pulled out.

If it is time to replace your exhaust system, consider going with oval carbon, oval titanium, or oval stainless for the slip on systems. Also, you will probably want to go with polished stainless steel end caps for your mufflers.

If you don’t race, then buy the standard air filter. This will save engine wear by filtering the air better as it flows into the bike’s intake, thus adding more quality miles to your GSXR experience. You might not have as many horses, but your engine will undoubtedly last longer.

Now, lets say you do both. You drive on the street, and you race. Well, in this case, you should decide which is more important to you. Are you going to own the bike for ten years, or are you going to trade it in in two? Do you care about engine wear, or would you rather have the extra horses? This is really a question that is for you to decide, and you should probably go with your first instinct.

Also, don’t forget that there are several brands available. If you plan to be racing, or if your bike is your primary means of transportation, then you might consider getting yourself a higher grade air filter. However, if you take it out of the garage one a week for a trip to the lake which is twenty minutes away, then there is really no need for this, and a lower grade filter will suffice. But just make sure that you do change your filter on the recommended intervals, as this will help your engine more than anything.
